When it comes to RV’s there are several well known brands, but none are as iconic as the Airstream. Dating all the way back to the 30’s, Airstreams have been helping families and adventurers head into the great outdoors. This invention made it possible for the whole family to travel across the country in style, and today, over 19,000 Airstream members across the world still celebrate this unique travel lifestyle!
The Origin Story: Wally Byam and the First Airstreams
The founder of Airstreams was Wally Byam born on the Fourth of July, 1896. He grew up in Oregon working on a sheep farm with his Uncle, where they lived out of a wooden trailer which had a stove, water, a couple of beds and food storage which was towed by a donkey. He ended up graduating from Stanford University and get married to his first wife Marion. The two newlyweds would often go camping together; however, Marion did not enjoy having to sleep in a tent on the hard ground! So Wally started putting the tent on top of a Model T frame. This contraption ended up to be quite the chore to set up, so he went back to the drawing board. Instead of the tent, he built a rounded wooden structure to put on top to withstand the cold and the rain. This was Wally’s start to building the Airstream as we know it today.
The 1930s Boom and WWII
By 1931, Wally had opened the first Airstream factory in California. He worked tirelessly to improve his trailers, adding comforts like a stove, water tanks, and even electric, making his trailers more advanced than most homes at the time! Soon after, the trailer market exploded and by 1937 there were around 400 trailer manufacturers. But then came World War II, which caused a massive aluminum shortage, forcing most factories to close which made the trailer market obsolete. Eventually, Wally had to shut down as well but he found work in aircraft factories, gaining invaluable knowledge about aerodynamics and lightweight design. This experience would later shape the iconic Airstream design.
The Birth of the Silver Bullet (1940s–1960s)
When Wally reopened his factory after World War II, he brought back new skills and a love for streamlined design. He launched the Airstream “Clipper” featuring a sleek aluminum body inspired by aircraft engineering. This wasn’t just any trailer, it was lightweight, fuel-efficient, and, above all, beautiful. People took notice, and soon the Airstream was a national sensation. In the 1950s, he led Airstream caravans across America and even to far-off places like Egypt and Central America, proving that an Airstream could handle any adventure. This was more than a road trip—it was a way of life, sparking the start of the first Airstream clubs, which are still going strong today! Byam's globetrotting adventures were the inspiration for the formation of the nonprofit club, Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI), to promote the use of Airstreams to travel as much as possible. Founded in Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1955, the club is still in existence today, with more than 6,000 member families.

Fun Facts about Airstreams
NASA and Airstream: Did you know that NASA used an Airstream as a quarantine vehicle for Apollo astronauts after their return from the moon? The Canadian Connection: The first Canadian Airstream Caravan, organized by Wally Byam himself, toured Eastern Canada in 1955. This journey helped spark a new wave of love for Airstreams in Canada, paving the way for Airstream clubs across the country.
Built to Last: Airstream trailers are known for their durability. Many of the first models ever made are still out there on the road today, testament to Wally’s commitment to quality.
